2. Recent Advances in Bridge Engineering Seminar, THU-FRI, 21-22 May 2009

 

This 2-day seminar presents the latest advances in the field of short and medium span bridges with emphasis on monitoring of their health by means of state-of-art electronic and photonic sensors and the use of RFP. The following speakers will present the seminar.

  • Baidar Bakht, P.Eng., D.Sc., FCSCE, FCAE; President, JMBT Structures Research Inc., and Adjunct Professor of Civil Engineering at the universities of Toronto and Manitoba
  • Aftab Mufti, P.Eng., Ph.D., FCSCE, FCAE;Professor of Civil Engineering, University of Manitoba, and President of ISIS Canada Research Network
  • Gamil Tadros, Ph.D., P.Eng.;SPECO Engineering Ltd.

 

The course will be complemented by a recently published book Recent Advances in Bridge Engineering written by Aftab Mufti, Baidar Bakht and Leslie Jaeger. A CD containing the latest versions of five analysis and design computer programs is appended to the book. The course will provide hands-on training in the use of these programs. The price of the
book is already included in the registration fee at a 30% discount.

3. Free to Attend- ASTM Workshop on Corrosion Mitigation and High Strength Steel in Concrete Structures; 8 AM- 5PM, MON, 18 May 2009; Hyatt Regency, Vancouver

 

 

The workshop will address corrosion mitigation and high strength steel, allowing the attendees to learn of the continuing research in these areas and of the future development of revised and new standards for corrosion-resistant and high strength steel reinforcement. During the workshop, advantages and limitations of several reinforcing materials (i.e., carbon steel, coated steel, alloyed steel and stainless steels) will be presented.  Opportunities for research and development of advanced corrosion mitigation techniques will be discussed.

4. Joint UBC-Tongji University Symposium on Structures/Bridges
Dr Carlos Ventura is spearheading to organize a joint symposium in the summer of 2009 between the University of British Columbia and the Tongji University of Shanghai, China. The symposium, sypported by the CSCE Vancouver Section, will be focussed on seismic engineering of buildings/bridges. Details will be made available as they evolve. Please stay tuned to theEvents section of our website .

6. Send Your Feedback about Proposed CSCE National Bylaw Amendment on Membership Provisions
Those of you subscribing to the CSCE National mailing list should have received the request for feedback about the proposed CSCE National Bylaw Amendments on Membership Provisions. The amendments relate to accomodating the Civil Engineering Technologist members not having formally accredited Bachelor's degrees and presently under the "Technical Affiliate" membership type. The amendments propose to offer regular CSCE membership after 4+ years of professional experience following the leads of similar international learned societies.

7. CSCE Vancouver AGM (Annual General Meeting) on 5:30-7:00 PM, MON, 1 June 2009
The CSCE Vancouver Section is holding its Annual General Meeting in Room CEME 1202, University of British Columbia on 5:30-7:00 PM, Monday, 1 June 2009.
All CSCE members living in the Metro Vancouver are encouraged to attend. As an additional reminder, we will soon send out a separate formal invitation email to the CSCE members residing in the Metro Vancouver area.
